EBT/Food Assistance Programs
To help fill the gap and get more farm-direct produce into the hands of all our neighboring citizens, the Adams County Farmers' Market Association offers consumers the convenience of providing SNAP/EBT wireless services at participating markets. (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Electronic Benefits Transfer) The benefit of EBT technology is three-fold: healthier populations due to greater access to fresh fruits and vegetables; improved environment through the retention of local farms; and a stronger economy as more consumers connect with area growers.
This market season, the Adams County Farmers' Market Association is piloting a Double Your Dollars Program for SNAP recipients at three markets this season. Wednesday at the Gettysburg Rec Park and Friday and Saturday's markets at the Outlet Shoppes. Clck on our Home page for hours and locations.
Increasing access to fresh food is critical in our nation's fight to reduce obesity, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other diet-related diseases.
The Double Your Dollars Progam is simple: SNAP recipients can swipe their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card and the market staff person will match the amount up to $10. For example, spend $10 of SNAP benefits and receive $20 in market tokens. The customer then uses the tokens to shop for SNAP eligible foods like fruit, vegetables, meats, bread, eggs and seedlings to grow food.
The 2013 Double Your Dollars Program is generously supported by the Adams County Community Foundation.
Market growers also accept FMNP and SFMNP coupons. The Farmers Market Nutrition Program provides residents and seniors coupons to purchase fresh fruits and produce at the farmers' market.
